Moon in 3D

The following is a 3D virtual reality model of my image of the lunar crater Gassendi superimposed on LOLA (Lunar Orbiting Laser Altimeter)  elevation data from the LROC spacecraft.

Once the scene has loaded use the following to navigate

  • left click and move to rotate about a pivot point
  • double click to create a different pivot point for the whole scene
  • scroll wheel to zoom
  • ctrl plus left click drag to pan

So using the mouse you can rotate the scene to any viewpoint you want. In the images below you can see how I have manipulated the view point in the 3D world to match a photograph taken from Apollo 16 in lunar orbit.

This is the basic image taken on 14/02/2011 and processed in Registax:

Before the image can be used it has to calibrated and rectified so that it appears as if viewed from directly above. This has been done in the image below. Note how the craters look much more round than they do in the foreshortened view from Earth.

As part of the calibration process the latitude and longitude of the image is calculated
